I will never understand people. My heart sank and I was panic-struck when I saw my car window had been bashed in and my prized possession, my GPS, was stolen. I know I shouldn’t have left her (yes, it’s a her, I named her, Claire, I loved her and thought of her like family) outside in my car. I still don’t know why I put her in the center console in my car, I’ll wonder that probably forever, but seriously, do these thieves really have to do this?
Cleaning all the glass out, getting the window covered – it’s not like we live somewhere warm and can get away with out a window, getting the window replaced, meanwhile parking it somewhere safe where someone else won’t try to hotwire and steal the shower curtain for a window car, trying to drive while peering out of a water-stained curtain, and on top of it all, directionless! I got Claire as a gift for Christmas because I’m not great with directions. In fact I used to get myself out of being lost because I recognized the area because I had been lost there before.
I miss her voice telling me: “In point seven miles, turn right,” and when I messed up even with her she’d say to me: “When possible, make a U-turn … recalculating …. Recalculating.” And the best sound of all: “Arriving at destination, on left.” Oh Claire. I miss you. I’d file a kidnapping if I could, you know I would.
But then! I get even more mad. I’m not alone, across the media I now see police have sent out a release warning people in my neighborhood of the car break ins. http://www.startribune.com/local/16986486.html
So they’re making many people victims. Why are people like this? Why don’t they have some sort of control or moral obligation to be nice?

People will steal...
Back to page topPeople will steal anything!
My daughter had a beater car that she slid sideways into a pole with when she hydroplaned during a rainstorm in the fall. Her dad welded aluminum siding over the now-useless rear passenger door (as if she wasn't humiliated enough by the car itself).
Last month, that ugly heap of metal was parked out in front of a friend's house overnight and somebody stole it and wrecked it.

Is stealing and act of...
Back to page topIs stealing and act of meaness or of desperation? I think people turn to a life of crime out of desperation because they see no other way out for themselves. The lesson for the rest of us is not to leave valuables in our cars ... period .. and to always lock our cars, garage doors and doors and windows to our homes. Sounds bad, but that's the way of the world, no matter if you live in Minneapolis or in Savage. What's more, many of today's youth are not stealing out of desperation, they are bored and want a thrill. And no matter what kind of car you have, someone will want to steal it if your car is in the right place at the wrong time. All we can do is live and learn the hard lessons that come from these trials and tribulations.

Back to page topTonight's TV news said thieves are targeting cars with GPS devices. Some people leave them in plain sight; while others tuck them away in a glovebox or center console, but leave the tell-tale suction cup holder in plain view. What's worse, thieves are apparently also looking for the marks left from the suction cup holders on the windshield to tell if the driver of the car might use a GPS. Sounds like we might all have to revert back to --- MAPS!

Back to page topThat would be nice. I've been thinking more and more about my cell phone and how it has a bunch of un-tapped abilities (i.e. GPS, mp3 player, internet) maybe I should look into capitalizing on those.

Back to page topWell, Keighla, I'm feeling your pain tonight.
Someone smashed my window and stole my two back speakers while my car was parked for one hour at the dog park by Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis.
One hour, broad daylight - between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Very highly trafficked area, with cars parked all around me on the street right next to the park. Someone had to have seen the person/people smash the window and dismantle and steal the speakers!
I always lock my doors, and I do not leave valuables in my car. I'm not sure what else I could have done to prevent this other than to cover up my speakers with a blanket or something!
They didn't even steal the car stereo!
Those were nice speakers, too...they probably saw the Infinity label on them and went for it. Unfortunately, I didn't write down the serial number, so they probably can't be tracked at a pawn shop.
So now my car has a lovely plastic sheet covering the window, too! At least the insurance will cover the glass.

Back to page topWe tried out the Minnehaha Park on Sunday (and made sure no valuables were in sight in the car and the alarm was set) and it was quite the beautiful setting -- even without leaves on the trees yet.
Had I not known about your troubles there, I would have made fun a friend of ours we ran into there, because she was lugging her purse with her on the trails.
Just so you know, this year's City Pages "Best Of" issue is out and Minnehaha was voted the best dog park with the following disclaimer:
"The only catch: Posted signs warn visitors of break-ins. It seems the long stretch of curbside parking that runs parallel to Hiawatha Avenue is a mighty temptation for petty thieves."
Again, thanks for the pre-warning before my visit there.

Back to page topLori, they probably took the bag because the needed something to carry the speakers in -- duh! they didn't want to look like thieves so they passed themselves off as health fanatics ;-)
Currently, I have two boxes of books, a box with jumper cables, fix-a-flat, etc. and various cold-weather gear strewn about my back seat. I think I'll clean my car out when I get home tonight to avoid broken glass.

Back to page topGood point, Ruth Anne...I never even thought about that! See, I'd be a horrible thief!
I didn't have time to clean...
Back to page topI didn't have time to clean out my car last night but, apparently, the risk of a break-in was on my mind because I had a dream (nightmare?) about it and the big bad thieves took everything out of my back seat -- including the two gallons of water I have in jugs for the dogs.
The only thing was that, in my dream, it was my old car that got broken into (and I kept all my junk -- I mean important stuff -- in the trunk) in that car. The car I'm currently driving is a station wagon and I don't have the luxury of a trunk to hide things in so I have no choice but to leave everything out in the open or -- horror! -- take it in the house.

Back to page topThere's another reason to clean out your car: When I crashed I had to go retrieve a bunch of stuff (that also could have flown around and hit me in the head!). I had a crockpot from a potluck, ice skates, a photo album and more junk tossed in my car from various events; I'm running here and there (always).
Can you imagine getting hit in the head with a crockpot? That would have really hurt. If I would have died from a "crockpot to the head" my obit would have been hysterical.
Well, luckily, the weather...
Back to page topWell, luckily, the weather is warmer and those jugs of water aren't going to turn into blocks of head-splitting ice again for awhile. But I got the message loud and clear -- tonight, I swear, the car gets cleaned out!

Well this is just...
Back to page topWell this is just great...BOTH of our neighbors on either side of us had their cars/trucks broken into last night...guess what they stole in both cases? GPS systems.
My one neighbor said he had his laptop in his car and they didn't even steal it!!
My car was parked on the street, right in between theirs, and didn't get hit. I guess they took a look and realized I have no speakers and nothing else to steal...

Back to page topSerious? I had mine replaced and I've been really careful with it. I'm going to get a lock box for it in my house now. No one can be trusted.

Back to page topI e-mailed our city council woman about the rash of thefts in our neighborhood. I would think the more reports they get of thefts in one area, and the more people bug them about it, the more likely the Minneapolis police would be to actually take a look at the problem. Maybe I'm being naive, though. I know they're pretty busy making sure people's grass isn't too long!
Here's how observant I am:...
Back to page topHere's how observant I am: We go to that dog park several times a week, and I've probably read those signs, but it didn't even register with me until you mentioned them!
Next time I might have to put a giant sign on my car that says "Speakers...gone. Gym bag...gone. Not much left to steal."

My car was broken into last night outside our house. They stole the stereo this time, but what I find rather hilarious is, in their haste, they forgot the faceplate. Bwahahaha!
But I guess the joke's on me, because my car is pretty much a shell at this point. Broken window (again), glass everywhere, no speakers, no stereo and a bent dash/stereo console.
I had been removing the faceplate after I got hit the first time, but I forgot last night. Bad move, I guess.
I'm going home tonight and cleaning out the garage (it's gotten a little messy with gardening season) and my car is going in there every night. My husband's car will have to be in the driveway, as we only have a one-car garage. The flood light will be on at all times.
My neighbors actually heard the glass break this time and called police. They saw the guys in my car. Luckily, they didn't try to confront them - that's just not worth it.
I hope the police catch these jerks.
