I wanna be an academy member

» Read similar stories filed under:

I know this is going to seem a little out there to some people but it’s heavy on my mind today, so excuse me. I also feel like I have a little clout on the topic because I used to work at a movie theatre.

Why do “out there” movies always seem to win the most awards? Who is “the academy” anyway? Despite spending four years asking people without thinking “would you like butter on your medium popcorn,” I never did develop that pretension for “artistic” movies that some theater employees do. I’m still going to laugh at the ridiculous high school coming of age movies replicating “American Pie,” I’m going to laugh and cry in a romantic comedy and (using my 4-year-old sister as an excuse) I’ll enjoy a cheesy cartoon. I don’t need the subtitles or the Japanese remakes or the adapted screenplays with so much depth and hidden meanings to say with confidence, “that was a really good movie.” Why does the academy need that?

For example, this past weekend I saw “Definitely, Maybe” with one of my close friends. It was fairly predictable, as in you knew the guy and the girl were going to end up together at the end of the movie, (don’t act like I spoiled the ending, you knew it would happen when you saw the first preview) but still I went home and said bragged about my night out and the good movie I saw. No crazy special effects, mysterious characters or heavy thinking. Where’s the award for “most overall entertaining movie.”

I dunno, this is just a rambling I suppose, but honestly, did anyone else walk out of “No Country for Old Men” and think, “What?!”

I had a similar reaction (i.e. "What?!") to "There Will be Blood" and what's his name won best actor..........or I guess they call it best lead actor now. Hollywood leans far to the left and purposely rewards films that are "out there". All the big winners were foreigners this year; Hollywood's little jab at the illegal immigration debate.

Hollywood is one of the most self-congratulating, self-centered, self-rewarding group under the sun. Don't get too caught up in what they say or do. They are merely entertainers.

I think Seth Rogan and Jonah Hill should have won Oscars for their performances in "Superbad" and "Knocked Up."

Seriously, though, Daniel Day Lewis is one of the --maybe even the -- best actors in history. My Left Foot, anyone? In the Name of the Father? Pretty much everything he's ever done is Oscar-worthy.

I agree, Lori, those were both stupid-funny movies and should be recognized.

One guy I wouldn't want to win anything though, is Will Ferrell, I can't stand his humor. More is less, buddy.

Nope, refused to see it, even for free when that was my job's number one perk. Can't stand his movies.

What about the one where he is the subject of the novel and is going to die at the end? That had at least a tiny bit of substance to it.

Most of his best work was on SNL where you were limited to small doses of his humor.

Stranger than Fiction. I did try to watch it, it was an atypical movie for him, but none-the-less, I was not a fan.

When he made his cameo in "Wedding Crashers" I tolerated it because it wasn't too long. At any rate, I don't want to see any more Will Ferrell. In fact, he and Conan O'Brian can both go into hiding and never appear in movies or TV and I'll be thrilled!

So what about movies that weren't even nominated? I thought "The Brave One" with Jodie Foster was really good. She's a top-notch actress, no matter what she does. But Jodie did not get the Oscar nod. I think the Oscars are rather snooty anyway. Yes, Daniel Day Lewis is a great actor and I agree with Lori on that point. But what was the deal with the woman who won for Best Lead Actress? Very odd....
