My dog ate my ...
Peanutbutter chocolate blossom cookies ... which were in a secured tupperware container. Good news is, he didn't eat the fudge, ginger cookies, a sugar cookie cutouts that were in other containers. Last year he ate a Gingerbread house that the kids had made and set up on the dining room table. That one was our fault -- it was too tempting. But this year -- he got a tupperware container open! Now the cookies are in a cabinet.

I gave up on my progressive

I gave up on my progressive glasses yesterday and I'm a much happier camper today! Yes, I now where a different pair of glasses while working at the computer than the ones I wear while doing everything else. But its as if a fog has lifted in my life. I'm free! I am no longer searching for the sweet spot to see down the road, focus on my computer screen and read the newspaper. I just switch glasses and everything is in focus. I'm sure progressives work for some folks; but not for me.

I visited with all four candidates for Savage City Council this week. Two stories will appear in the Oct. 10 edition, and two more will appear in the Oct. 17 edition. They are all very nice folks and I'm looking forward to hearing more from them at the Candidate's Forum on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at Savage City Hall.

The Dan Patch Days Board of Directors gave out $11,000 last night to community organizations. Giving money back to the community is a long tradition for Dan Patch Days, which is great to see!

Doesn't anyone say "good

Doesn't anyone say "good morning" anymore? Although I was born and raised in the north, I often visited the south because my grandparents lived in Tennessee. As well, I was stationed at many southern bases when my husband was in the military. There, people who don't even know you say "Good morning" or "Hello" and they don't even know you. Here, co-workers walk into work without saying a word, sit down at their desks and stare at their computer. What's the world coming to?

I drove a SMART car on

I drove a SMART car on Saturday. It was an interesting experience and believe it or not, it was a very smooth ride. We didn't buy one -- we're just looking at car options now because my 10-year-old VW bug has had some major repairs in the last few months, so we're looking around. The only place in the state to look them over is in Bloomington, near the Southtown area.

When I first started

When I first started covering the School District 191 beat, Todd was very approachable and was very good at summing up what he felt about an issue in a quotable sense.

When he walked into the meetings, almost every week Todd would wink a "hello" on his way past me at the media table.

I saw Mayor Janet Williams

I saw Mayor Janet Williams use an innovative way to eat a cupcake at the Savage Chamber of Commerce meeting today. She popped broke off the bottom half of the cupcake and plopped it on top of the frosting, then smushed it down so that it looked like an Oreo. When she realized the three of us standing there talking to her had never seen that cupcake-eating method, she simply said she always eats cupcakes that way! I tried it and it works great. By the way -- we were eating cupcakes in honor of City Administrator Barry Stock's 50th birthday!

I walked into the Savage

I walked into the Savage City Council meeting last night naked. No, not that kind of naked! The paperless kind of naked! Although I've been taking notes on a laptop computer for years, I've always had a paper copy of the agenda with me during meetings. But I decided to try the paperless route, downloading the PDF of the agenda that is e-mailed to me every week on my laptop. At first, I was anxious, but I'm happy to report it went fine, and no trees were killed in the process of covering the meeting!

I enjoyed a cup of coffee on

I enjoyed a cup of coffee on the outdoor deck of the Savage Depot this morning with Chase Jurgensen of the Brand Company to talk about the work his company has done to rehabilitate the exteriors of several businesses in the area. He is only 25 years old (the same age as my oldest son) so I felt old and mentioned this to City Administrator Barry Stock when I called him to talk about the city's program. Barry's response to my "feeling old" comment was to say, "I hate to tell you this Nancy ..." He was kind enough not to finish his sentence! Oh well, I'll be writing about Chase in the Aug. 1 edition of the Pacer, so watch for the story!

Want to see a roundabout in

Want to see a roundabout in action? Come to the open house this Thursday (July 16) from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Savage City Hall. The Savage City Council got a sneak peek at the presentation during its work session Monday night and it included a computer program that shows how the roundabout will work with cars moving in and out of the new intersection.

Lynn Avenue will be closed

Lynn Avenue will be closed to traffic one day next week -- the scheduled day is Thursday, July 16 -- so that the railroad bridge can be painted. There's lots of graffiti on it, so city crews will just paint the whole thing. I think the old bridge presents an opportunity for some sort of organized public art project -- what do you think?

I survived "Creed Fest

I survived "Creed Fest 2009!" That's the slogan I'm thinking about having printed on t-shirts for members of my family who came to Minnesota over the Fourth of July weekend. My maiden name is Creed, so to all those music fans who thought I was referring to the group, "Creed," sorry! We had a great time and survived the 16 inning Tigers-Twins game at the Metrodome (Go Tigers -- we're from Michigan). In addition to 10 house guests, we had the four-legged kind, too -- my brother Steve's dog, Spice; and my son Andy's cat, Donatello and they both got along with our dog, Max. Donatello found a baby mouse in the laundry room one night and presented it to those sleeping in the basement, which made for an exciting morning for everyone!

Every month there are things that I come across in my job that never make it into print. Sometimes its something simple, other times its kind of silly. Here's a list of some recent observations.

Janet Williams and her son, Kyle, participated in the annual NAMI awareness walk at Minnehaha Falls on Sept. 28.
