Register teams for Relay for Life
April 29, 2008 - 1:39pm — Nancy Huddleston
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Scott County is just around the corner, so residents are encouraged to form teams now. Register teams by contacting Janice Anastasi, team coordinator at janice.anastasi@allina.com or call (952) 403-2712 or log onto www.cancer.org/rflscottcountymn. Former and current cancer patients, their families and friends, businesses, civic and service organizations, churches, and the public are invited to take part in the Relay for Life. The event begins at 7 p.m. July 11 and concludes at 7 a.m. July 12 at Vaughan Athletic Field, south of Shakopee Junior High School. Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s family-oriented event where participants enjoy the fellowship of a team while joining with the larger community to raise funds in support of the activities and research conducted by the American Cancer Society. Participants camp out on the field and walk the track throughout the night, take part in various activities and enjoy free entertainment in a festive and supportive atmosphere. Teams can be formed through churches, local businesses, companies, neighborhoods, organizations, healthcare facilities, families and friends. Donations are collected by team members, both individuals and teams are recognized for their contribution efforts. “Relay For Life brings the fight against cancer to the forefront,” said Ruby Winings, chairwoman for the event. “Many people attending Relay are loved ones, friends and neighbors who have dealt with cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made not only in reducing death rates, but also in the improved quality of life following cancer treatment. “Participants who return to Relay year after year are a testament to their strength and determination and confirms the promise that funds raised enable us to continue our investment in the fight against cancer through research, education, advocacy and patient services,” said Winings. Corporate sponsors include: Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, St. Francis Cancer Center and Prior Lake State Bank. The money raised by Relay participants goes directly to the local American Cancer Society for life-saving programs.
