Environmental Learning Center logo to be unveiled
April 30, 2008 - 3:06pm — Nancy Huddleston
The city of Savage will unveil a logo for the future McColl Pond Environmental Learning Center on Monday, May 5 at the start of the regular City Council meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at Savage City Hall, 6000 McColl Drive. The logo was voluntarily designed by Savage resident and artist Greg Preslicka of Preslicka Studios. Preslicka also designed Savage’s official logo, which was adopted by the City Council in 2000. Construction on the Environmental Learning Center is expected to begin this week at Community Park. The building will be constructed of recycled materials and will incorporate several environmentally-friendly features that will result in a model for sustainable design. These include, but are not limited to, a green roof and rain gardens to filter storm water; and geothermal and solar devices to heat and cool the building. When complete this fall, the ELC will be a multi-purpose facility that can be used by community members of all ages. It will be home to the City’s existing environmental education program with local elementary schools. With a capacity for more than 200 people, the building may be rented by the public to hold meetings or celebrate graduations, anniversaries, birthdays, family reunions, weddings and other occasions. Accessible during the day, the ELC also offers the community a place to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings of McColl Pond — perhaps while taking a lunch or coffee break. A number of programs sponsored by Savage Parks and Recreation also will be held at the ELC.
