 Voters approve levy in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District

On Tuesday, voters approved a $6.75 million levy request in the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District. Unofficial results late Tuesday indicated the levy passed by a margin of 330 votes. The tally was 6,183 to 5,853. Now, the district will be able to erase its estimated deficit of $3.5 million, restore class sizes to the 2006-07 levels by hiring additional teachers and save the remainder to retain programs and class sizes. It would cost around $2 million to restore teacher positions. Vicki Roy broke into happy tears when she heard the results around 11:30 p.m. “It’s knowing that the community that’s always supported its kids is coming back and supporting its kids again,” said Roy, who is vice chairwoman of the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School Board.

The majority of voters this time around were parents with kids attending school in the district. Please notice that this referendum was nearly voted down - a 330 vote margin of victory out of 12,000 cast is not exactly a sweeping majority.
Sorry Viki, but it's condescending for you to suggest that those who voted against the levy don't support kids. To the contrary, we expect 191 Administration and our Board of Education to be good stewards of the monies collected so our kids receive an adequate education within a budget that we can all afford.
I hope our school board members will especially take note: Now is NOT the time to introduce new programs in 191.
Many of us are watching very closely.
