The Savage Arts Council will be sponsoring two juried art competitions – one for adults and another for youths – in conjunction with Dan Patch Days.

Winners of the Dan Patch Days Art Competition Show (for adults) will be announced June 14 and the display will open June 21, the weekend of Dan Patch Days.

The Junior Dan Patch Days Art Competition is designed to highlight local south-of-the-river students with an art show from June 7-July 26.

The events have been made possible with a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (MRAC).

“We want the event to have its own identity in our community,” said Jo Storey chairwoman of Savage Arts Council Board. “The adult awards event will be held the weekend before Dan Patch Days, when people are not already so busy.”

The schedule for the adult show will be as follows:

May 31: Adults drop off art work from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Savage Art Studios, 4735 W. 123rd St., Suite 100June 2 – 5: JudgingJune 11 – 16: Pre-Award show on display at Savage Art StudiosJune 14 at 4 p.m.: Award ceremony with Judge Brian Stewart at Savage Art Studios. The judge will present all awards and give a talk about the show, his decision process and the award winning works. Free and open to the public.

June 21 to July 26: Art Competition Show will be on display at Savage Art Studios, Sterling Bank, Anchor Bank and other sponsor locations.

Competition categories include: two-dimensional visual arts competition for oil, water media (watercolor and acrylic), mixed media, pastels and drawing, photography and three-dimensional visual arts and fine crafts in sculpture, pottery and glass. Prizes range from $50 to $100 for first, second and honorable mention in each category.

There is also a “Best in Show” prize, with an award of $200. And there is the “Marion W. Savage People’s Choice Award,” with a $100 prize, which is selected by popular vote of the people who view the show. For a complete copy of the prospectus, go to www.savageartscouncil.org. The Junior Art Competition is open to students currently attending seventh through 12th grades in School Districts 191, 720, 719 and private and home-school youth living in these communities. The goal of the competition is to highlight young artists in a positive and unique event. All eligible works submitted will be hung in the event art show. The program includes the following schedule and prizes:May 23: Drop off ready-to-hang art work from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Savage City Hall, 6000 McColl Drive.

June 7 to July 26: Junior Art Show open to public at Savage City Hall.

June 14 at 11 a.m.: Judge Greg Preslicka, professional fine artist, illustrator and owner of Preslicka Studio in Savage, will present awards ranging from $50 to $100 to grade winners in a public ceremony. He will give a general overview of the show and highlight the award winners works, then present them with their prize. To learn more about this event, students should contact their school’s art teacher or pick up a brochure at Savage City Hall, the Savage Public Library or Savage Art Studios.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to bring this new event to Savage," said Lezlee Hustad, committee chairwoman of the event. "We wanted to do this in 2007, but funding was an issue. This year we received a grant from MRAC that allows us to expand our adult show and launch our youth competition, too."

Both competitions will require volunteer support, so Savage Arts Council members are asking residents, community members and artists interested in volunteering to contact them at info@savageartstudios.com.
