Although viewing the Minnesota River in Savage is difficult, it can be done, as seen in this photo of the old swing bridge. The bridge is located at the northern end of Vernon Avenue, which is not accessible to the public. Many years ago, the swing bridge was the only river crossing for residents south of the river. It is no longer in use and sits open so that river traffic can pass through the area easily. Watch this Web site for continuous updates on the level of the Minnesota River. The level of the Credit River is stabilizing in Savage, but right now it is way outside of its banks in some places. This picture was taken from the River Crossing bridge in Dufferin Park, where the river has spread into low-lying areas in residential backyards. Chunks of ice are also getting stuck in bends in the river, causing the water to spread out even further in some areas. Watch our Web site for daily flood updates and read this weekend's print edition for all the details. (Staff photo by Nancy Huddleston)
