A local teacher has been named a regional honoree in the WEM Foundation’s 2009 Outstanding Educator Awards program.
Allison Fasking, who currently teaches seventh-grade life science at Twin Oaks Middle School, was given a Teacher Achievement Award, which “recognizes exemplary teachers who support, inspire and assist students to attain greater learning as evidenced by student achievement,” WEM Foundation spokeswoman Joyce Swenson said in a statement.
Fasking is a founding member of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme pilot team and teaches life science to students pursuing certificates in the program. She also implemented the Genographic Project, in which students study patterns of ancient human migration.
Labs, simulation activities, field explorations and other hands-on activities are often used in Fasking’s classrooms, Swenson added.
“She also encourages community involvement in her classroom and has collaborated with local groups to fund initiatives, including the Genographic Project, Archeological Dig Site and Science Club,” the spokeswoman said.
The WEM Foundation, part of the Center for Academic Excellence, presents awards to teachers on an annual basis. This year, six teachers received statewide honors while 10 received regional awards.
