Avenging a pair of earlier losses to Chaska, the Prior Lake Jays topped the Cubs 6-4 on July 1, improving to 15-9 overall on the season.
The Jays struck early with a five-run second inning that featured six hits.
Tim Garceau led off the pivotal second inning with a home run, his team-leading fourth of the season. He went 3-for-5 in the game and leads the Jays with a .443 batting average this season.
Scott Geisler and Ben Wartman then followed with back-to-back singles for Prior Lake before moving up on Sam Hoppe’s sacrifice bunt. Wartman went 3-for-5 in the game, while Geisler had two hits of his own.
An RBI-groundout from Marshall Mullenbach brought Geisler home with the second run of the game, and Adam Cress followed with an RBI-single that made it 3-0.
A single by Tony Doherty followed, and a groundball from John Somrock failed to produce an out for Chaska and loaded the bases. Doherty had two hits in the game.
Dusty Olynyk, the Jays’ ninth batter of the inning, then delivered a two-out, two-run single to extend Prior Lake’s lead to 5-0.
The Jays added another run in the fifth inning when Hoppe doubled and eventually scored on a passed ball.
That turned out to be enough run support for Chris Swiatkiewicz, who earned the complete-game victory. He allowed eight hits and struck out seven.
Chaska got a run in the ninth to pull within 6-4 and then put the tying runs on base, but Swiatkiewicz was able to induce a game-ending fly ball to get out of the jam.
The Jays had gone into the game on the heels of a 13-7 victory over Section 3B foe Green Isle.
Prior Lake got home runs from Garceau, Geisler and Wartman in the game. Geisler and Garceau both doubled, as well, and each had three hits in the game, while Wartman had two hits. Garceau also got the win in relief.
Doherty also had three hits in the game for the Jays, who got two hits apiece from Olynyk and Somrock, as well.
Two days earlier, the Jays visited Jordan and got blanked 10-0 in eight innings.
The Jays managed just five hits in the game – one each from Cress, Geisler, Olynyk, Wartman and Richard White.
Prior Lake will be back in action on Sunday, July 6, playing host to the Shakopee Indians at 6 p.m. at Memorial Park’s Veterans Field.
A trip to Waconia follows on July 8, and then Green Isle visits for another 7:30 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday, July 9.
The annual all-star game, which pits players from the River Valley and Dakota-Rice-Scott leagues against each other, is set for 8 p.m. on July 11 in Arlington.
Representing the Jays on the River Valley team are Garceau, Geisler and Tony Eischer. Garceau will also take part in the home run contest that precedes the game.
