Celebrate the Legend: Depot Task Force answers the call

Just who is making the depot decisions? When the Dan Patch Historical Society and the city entered into an agreement on the Savage depot, it was decided to establish a Depot Task Force. The Task Force was charged with making the decisions with the membership as follows: two members of the DPHS selected by their Board of Directors (Rob Fendler and Joe Cade), two elected city officials selected by the City Council (Mayor Tom Brennan and Council member Janet Williams) and three city staff (Barry Stock, city administrator; Scott Somers, assistant city administrator; and Jay Sherer, building official.) The group meets every other week to monitor progress and make decisions.

Matthew Lorang, a Savage resident who is the process of working on his Eagle Scout rank, needs a community project to fulfill his requirement for the award. At the City Council workshop on Feb. 12, he proposed a kiosk with a map highlighting areas of historical interest. He identified two sites, of which one was the Depot site. The council liked the idea and referred it to the Depot Task Force, which enthusiastically endorsed the project and recommended that it be placed on the southwest corner of the depot at the end of the proposed track. Yes, imbedded in the ground will be some rail from the original Dan Patch Line and some railroad ties. We have the rail, anyone know where we can get the ties and the railroad spikes? The Dan Patch Historical Society proudly works to keep the heritage of this community alive. This bimonthly feature is a partnership with the Dan Patch Historical Society and the Savage Pacer. Information is provided by the historical society.
