An off-the-cuff comment made by a DirecTV worker led a dispatcher to send armed sheriff’s deputies to a home in Savage Friday. Two DirecTV employees were working at a home at 8415 153rd Place in the Cates Lake neighborhood when one of the men apparently mentioned to a dispatcher they were being held hostage. Turns out it was a difficult satellite installation and the men felt that they were hostage to the job, but not in any danger. However, the DirecTV dispatcher took the hostage comment seriously and called the Scott County Sheriff’s Department. As a result, Savage police, sheriff’s deputies and officers from other police agencies showed up, surrounded the house and ordered everyone out at gunpoint. Officers were at the 5:45 p.m. call for about 25 minutes before the situation was sorted out and everyone went back to what they were doing before police were dispatched. “I’m sure everyone had a good laugh afterward,” said Detective Dave Muelken of the Savage Police Department, “but it just goes to show that you have to be careful what you say.”
