On the first day of the filing period for openings on the Savage City Council, three candidates have submitted thier affidavits of candidacy.
Councilwoman Janet Williams has filed for mayor, Councilman Al McColl has filed to be re-elected to his seat and Planning Commissioner Garry Larson has filed for a city council seat.
The filing period for city elections closes on Sept. 11.
Mayor Tom Brennan has announced he does not plan to seek re-election and the terms of Councilman McColl and Councilwoman Williams are expiring. The mayor’s term has changed from two years to four years and the two city council terms are for four years each.
Interested candidates should file with the city clerk’s office, located in Savage City Hall, 6000 McColl Dr. The filing process involves filling out and signing an affidavit of candidacy and paying a $2 filing fee.
To be eligible for mayor or city council, a candidate must be a resident of the city of Savage for 30 days before the election, a qualified city voter, 21 years of age upon assuming office, and cannot run for another office at the same election.
