While working an enhanced speeding patrol effort, Savage police officers cited 158 motorists traveling at illegal speeds during a statewide Safe and Sober Effort throughout the month of April.

“When you’re behind the wheel, don’t put your schedule ahead of safety,” Savage Police Sergeant Mike Schiltz said. “Your role as a driver is to travel at safe speeds and eliminate dangerous risks that could result in tragedy.”

Speeding is the most common reported factor in fatal crashes. Each year in Minnesota, speed contributes to about 150 traffic deaths and 7,000 injuries.

The Safe and Sober Effort is coordinated by the Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety. The campaign is a component of the state’s Toward Zero Death initiative (TZD). TZD is a multi-agency approach to address traffic issues regionally through enforcement, education, engineering and emergency trauma care and response.
