Softball: Blaze loses battle of ranked teams

The Burnsville softball team lost for only the second time in the last 11 games on May 8, falling 1-0 in a Lake Conference road game.

The game featured two of Class AAA's ranked teams - the No. 6 Blaze and No. 7 Bloomington Jefferson.

The Jaguars scored the game's only run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. Ninth-grader Kelsey Anderson took the loss for the Blaze, despite allowing only three hits and no earned runs in six innings.

The Blaze left the tying run on base in the seventh inning. Sarah Wiens singled and reached second on a ground out. Burnsville also straned runners on second base in the second and third innings.

Ninth-grader Lauren Smith had a double in the loss. Smith has hit safely in 11 of the past 12 games.

The Blaze (9-3 overall, 8-2 in the confernece) will return home on Monday, May 12 to take on Bloomington Kennedy in a conference game at 4:15 p.m. The game will also celebrate the team's seniors - Wiens, Jackie Ross, Jamie Lindboe, Danielle Mohr, Nikki Paulson, Katy Jones, Shannon Reger and Abbigail Wheling

Burnsville will close out the regular season on Wednesday, May 14 with a doubleheader at Lakeville South starting at 4:15 p.m.
