The Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District Board of Education has set a tentative meeting for 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, at the Administrative Services Center, 100 River Ridge Ct., Burnsville, to consider whether to retain a primary in September for school board elections.
A new state law eliminated the required-September primary for school board elections, but allows school districts to pass a resolution to retain a primary election if they wish.
Even if the board decides in favor of a primary election in September, it would only take place if the number of candidates reached seven (double the number of openings on a board, plus one), according to state law.
The board’s decision could also affect the time period that candidates could file for office. If there is no primary election, then the period for candidates to file for office would be moved back to the end of August. If a primary will take place, then the filing period would take place the first part of July, as originally scheduled.
